Should we build with stock plans?

I recently got excited when I found Southern Living's stock of plans.  I found them when we were considering building modularly.  Haven Homes builds some of their designs.  I think the best ones are designed by Looney Ricks Kiss.  They have some really charming and efficient homes.  They are a bit more expensive than the Lowe's plans but have a lot more style and simple beauty.  Check out the house at the beginning of this post.  I want this to be our home!  Apparently they designed it for Southern Homes as an "idea" house.  Check out the link: http://www.lrk.com/cms.aspx?TabID=190

Has anyone ever built from stock plans before?

I'm nervous about not having an architect take into account where you place the property on the site as well as customizing the house to the features of the property as well as our needs.

  1. I know lots of people that have including my own daughter. They have all been very happy! Love this house, go for it.

  2. You have quite a challenge ahead of you. An architect, I've been told, is worth its cost in preparing plans that fit your site as well as other conditions in your neck of the woods. We purchased a kit sunroom from out of state. Our planning engineer would not approve the plans until we modified them for the kind of winds we get here. Believe me, his insistence saved us many problems.

    Thanks for your visit.

  3. I would go with Lakeviewer's recommendations. Consult with him/her and show the home (above) you like. At least get their input/recommendations if nothing else. The money you pay might be well worth it in the end. I find there are so many rules and regulations now. You don't want to get caught in that red tape!
